

Cyprus is more important and less well-defended, and the Turks aren't stupid. First Senator mulls this over - aloud - and comes to the conclusion that the Turks must be making a diversionary feint towards Rhodes. However, just as the men start to think that they can be sure of that much, a sailor rushes in with the news that the Turkish fleet is headed for Rhodes, not Cyprus. The only thing that everyone can agree on is that there is a very large Turkish fleet approaching Cyprus, a Venetian possession. One report says that there are 107 warships, while others give the numbers as 140 and 200. He says, "There is no composition in these news / That gives them credit" (1.3.1-2).

The Duke is trying to figure out just what is happening, but the various reports are so different that he doesn't know if he can believe any of them. Iago is arrested and sent to trial after Othello wounds him (he doesn't even die). Iago, reacting to his wife's accusations, stabs and kills her. Emilia realises what has happened and betrays Iago‘s plots against Othello. Othello defends himself, mentioning the handkerchief as evidence.

Emilia alerts the household, causing Iago and others to come to the scene. He smothers her with a pillow as she asserts her innocence. Othello comes to his sleeping wife's bedroom to murder her as punishment for her supposed adultery. He then enters again as himself to accuse and kill Roderigo for the act of wounding Cassio. In the fight that ensues, Iago goes undetected and wounds Cassio. Still Iago persuades him to attack Cassio that night (again, to be able to court Desdemona). Meanwhile, Roderigo has begun to suspect Iago is not quite the friend he seems.

Full of fury, Brabantio goes to the council. The Senate is concerned about the imminent threat of a Turkish invasion fleet on Cyprus. At that moment, officers arrive to summon Brabantio to an urgent meeting of the Senate. Brabantio angrily summons the militia to arrest Othello. So late at night, Iago and Roderigo wake Brabantio and tell him the news of Desdemona. He knows Senator Brabantio, Desdemona's father, will dislike having Othello as a son-in-law. Iago urges Roderigo to continue his pursuit of Desdemona. Instead, Othello chose Michael Cassio, leaving Iago only at the low rank of ensign.
